Part llI: Empowering teams for high performance

5-7 mins

Building on our exploration of the different types of teams (read more here) and the key ingredients behind empowered product teams (read more here), this installment dives deeper into the benefits of the empowered team model, as shared by one of my senior engineers during the writing of this blog.

Working in this new model has empowered us to drive innovation by directly understanding customer pain points, fueling the development of more compelling products. It has given us ownership of the product, constantly asking how we can better serve the customer. We see ourselves as stakeholders, not just developers executing orders.

Q: Do you feel more or less empowered after introducing this way of working? And why?

A: I feel more empowered because I can now take steps to improve the product without waiting for approval from the PO. This autonomy allows me to make decisions that I believe are right for the product. I can take ownership of my work and contribute more to the team.

Q: How has having more autonomy in decision-making impacted your work and the team’s overall performance?

A: With greater decision-making autonomy, I feel more ownership of the product. Our team has become more productive and efficient, delivering the product faster and with better quality.

Q: Have you noticed any changes in how we solve problems together?

A: Yes, we solve problems faster and more effectively now. As a team, we make decisions and take action collaboratively, leading to better solutions.

Q: How has being empowered influenced your ability to innovate and bring new ideas to the table?

A: I feel more motivated to bring new ideas and innovate. With the freedom to take risks and try new things through experiments, I can contribute more creatively.

Q: How has the shift to an empowered team model affected your motivation and engagement at work? Do you feel more invested in the outcomes of our projects? Why or why not?

A: I am more motivated and engaged at work, feeling more invested in the outcomes of our projects. The sense of ownership over my work allows me to contribute more effectively to the team.

Q: How has the new way of working contributed to your personal and professional growth? Have you had opportunities to develop new skills or take on new challenges?

A: Yes, I have had opportunities to develop new skills and take on new challenges. This environment has allowed me to learn and grow as a professional, preparing me for future roles.

Q: How has the empowered team model impacted our efficiency and productivity? Can you provide an example of how we’ve been able to deliver results more effectively?

A: We are now more efficient and productive, delivering results faster and with better quality. For example, we make decisions as a team and take actions collaboratively. However, if any team member lacks ownership, it can be challenging. Therefore, team members’ motivation is crucial.

Q: How has being more empowered helped us better understand and meet our customers’ needs? Have you seen any improvements in customer satisfaction or feedback?

A: We are more empowered to understand and meet our customers’ needs. By making decisions that prioritize our customers, we can deliver better products. We have seen improvements in customer satisfaction and feedback.
